This post has been a long time coming, but with a baby on the way I figured it was time to get back to this series and continue to share about John and I’s story! When I realized that my “About Me” section wasn’t a sufficient avenue to share the story of how we became husband and wife, I decided to start this mini series on the blog! If you missed Part 1 of this series, be sure to check it out to read all about how John and I both grew up in the small town of Florence but didn’t officially “meet” until highschool, which you can read about in Part 2. For Part 3 of this series, I’m so excited to finally share how John proposed!!! 🙂 Sorry in advance– this is a bit of a long story!
This story starts on our third anniversary. I had made it known for about 6 months leading up to it that an engagement should probably be imminent. HAHA! John was totally on the same page, though, and we would talk about getting married and the type of life we wanted together frequently. Still though, with the frequent conversations, I really wasn’t expecting anything to happen on our anniversary. John has always been great about planning special things for our anniversary, so when the day started I didn’t look too far into the scavenger hunt he had me start on. I genuinely thought he had just planned a really special anniversary date night!
So everything began when I started getting little notes from John- the first one came from my mom and noted that we would be going to get manicures and pedicures together. I felt so spoiled and definitely appreciated the girl time with my mom! After that, I was whisked away to get my hair and makeup done. Around this time I remember thinking John must have something really fancy planned because I NEVER get my hair and makeup done! Then my mom drove me to John’s house where there was a trail of notes leading me to an outfit to get changed into. He had picked out a dress that I had just recently bought! So by now, I’m literally all done up from head to toe and crazy excited for whatever he had planned for the evening. In between the notes with directions, John also sprinkled in notes with things he loves about me, just to make things even sweeter. After all this, I know it seems impossible, but I still didn’t think he’d be proposing. In my defense, John has always been thoughtful and something like this wouldn’t be totally out of the ordinary from him. He can be a bit of a romantic. 😉
Once I was completely ready, my mom said it was time to go again. She gave me a note from John that said he was excited to see me soon. By now, I’m totally expecting to drive to some fancy restaurant for dinner or something, but my mom starts driving to the actual middle of nowhere. As she’s driving, I start to recognize the scenery and realize we are driving to a familiar field that John and I had done several photoshoots in. It was actually one of my favorite locations for shoots because the lighting was always so pretty!
As we turn around the corner I start to put a few things together and look over at my mom, who has tears in her eyes. I look back toward the field and see a long line of people and a photographer running back and forth and I say, “OH MY GOD. Is that Charity Maurer?!” Charity is of course, a wedding photographer whose work I had obsessed over for months and months. By now, things start to fall into place, and although it still doesn’t feel real, I realize this is about a lot more than our anniversary. My mom says, “I did so good, can you believe it?! I didn’t ruin anything!!” This made me laugh because my mom CANNOT keep a secret to save her life!
We park, and I hop out of the car and start to recognize the people in the field. In a long line across the grass are John and I’s immediately family members, separated with space between them across the field. My mom motions for me to start crossing the field, so I walk to John’s sisters first, who then begin to walk with me to the next family members while they say sweet things about how excited they are for me and John. One by one, each family member walks me to the next and tells me what they love about John and I together, or how they are so excited to welcome me to the family. By now, I’m definitely crying and in total shock that John put so much thought into this. He even had my dad join in via FaceTime (who lived across the country at the time). It meant so much to me to have our family members a part of such a special moment.
My mom and Stepdad were the last people at the end of the field, and after sharing sweet sentiments and tears, my mom escorted me to the final person, John. He was waiting under a tree that I had photographed many times before, looking handsome as ever. I know he said something absolutely amazing about how I was his best friend and he couldn’t wait to spend our lives together, but if I’m being honest, I can’t remember any specific words because I was so shocked. He got down on one knee and I said YESSSSS! Our family cheered and celebrated, and then joined us for one big group photo before leaving.
Of course, then I realized why I had gotten so dressed up… Charity Maurer was there and all ready for our engagement session! It was absolutely surreal to be taking our engagement photos after practically stalking her photography for months on end- LOL! I couldn’t believe John had hired her to be our wedding photographer. It was truly the icing on the cake!
After our engagement session, we headed back to John’s house where our family had gathered for a surprise engagement party! I honestly couldn’t believe the surprises just kept coming!! It was so special to get to celebrate with everyone and relive the day’s events from my point of view with everyone. It was amazing to me that so many people had kept this secret from me, and I just felt so thankful to be engaged to a man who put so much thought into asking me to be his wife. With that, I’ll leave you with my favorite photo from our engagement session…
