Friends, I have been so excited to start this blog series here on our website. I started realizing that my “About Me” section merely isn’t a sufficient avenue to share this story.. One of my favorite stories.. How John and I became husband and wife and all of the details in between. A lot of people know that John and I are high school sweethearts, but our story actually begins before high school, in the small town of Florence, Arizona, where we grew up.
I’ll start by saying that John and I didn’t meet until my junior year of high school (he was a senior), but the crazy thing about this is how many opportunities there were for us to meet before then- but we didn’t.
To give you a better grasp of this, it might be helpful to mention that Florence was literally the tiniest town on the entire planet. Everyone knew everyone in this tiny two-stoplight town, and I loved it that way! When John was 7 years old, he played football for the WildCats, a youth football league my mom was the president of. I love that we have photos of John as a little football player long before he gave up sports so he could focus on being an awesome musician. Haha! It’s crazy to me because I used to cheer for the WildCats football league but somehow I never cheered for John’s team.
Now, comes the even weirder part.. John’s mom was my sixth grade teacher. Mrs. Cantu was not only my teacher, but one of my favorites in all of my schooling history, and she would tell you that I was one of her favorite students, too! Haha! I can’t tell you the number of times I had interacted with not only John’s dad, but also with his younger sisters (I also volunteered in his sister Gracie’s first grade classroom). John would come into the classroom occasionally and ALL of the girls had a crush on him- of course, because not only was he adorable, but he was one grade older and that somehow made him even cuter! Haha! Even then, I never actually met John. We were just two middle schoolers living our lives, not knowing we would one day be married.
I say all of this to give you one simple picture: it amazes me to see how in all of this, God had a plan. A plan where He would bring John and I together at just the right time, and our lives would be changed forever. It’s one of my favorite things about our relationship to know that we have this weird shared history in this tiny town called Florence. In so many ways, we can relate to one another because of where and how we grew up, and it’s been the coolest thing to see how much we’ve grown and changed together since then.
That’s it for now, but next time, I’ll be sharing how John and I actually came to meet.. So make sure you check back for Part 2! 🙂
