Sedona Arizona Engagement Session | Vanessa & Jay
Vanessa and Jay met while they both worked for Teach for America as summer interns at Arizona State University. Their first “date” was a run around ASU and up “A” mountain, where Vanessa ended up having an asthma attack! It’s safe to say they were off to a great start! After about three weeks of dating, Vanessa’s mother was diagnosed with cancer. Vanessa says “Jay was incredible and supported me through the difficulties that resulted from her diagnosis (she is cancer free now, and has been in remission for four years).” It’s amazing that through the difficulty of illness and a new relationship, they were able to grow closer to one another and are now getting married!!
Their proposal story is one of my favorites!! From Vanessa:
Jay chose an incredibly thoughtful time and place to propose. My mom, brother, aunt and two uncles walked in the Susan G Komen 60 mile walk for breast cancer in San Diego right before Thanksgiving. Our whole family decided to stay the week of Thanksgiving in a condo on the beach. On a Wednesday, we went to the San Diego Zoo – Jay’s favorite place is the zoo – and had planned to stay all day to see as much as possible. My mom was trying to get us to leave before the park closed to get back to the condo before sunset. I was very confused, but Jay calmly persuaded me to just go with it and head back. Jay then said we should go down to the beach and play with my brothers. When we got down there, my brothers did not show up and so Jay suggested a walk down the beach. At this point I was full of energy and suspicion because 1) Jay hates walking and 2) We were walking on the beach at sunset. However, I had already scanned Jay’s pockets and could not see anything in them, so I just assumed I was getting excited for nothing. We walked maybe 200 yards down the beach and then back in front of the condo, where Jay then proposed. Of course I immediately began to cry, and said yes. From the balcony of the condo we heard my littlest brother shout “Yeaah Jay!” After a few minutes, my brothers stealthily came down and took photos, then everyone came down and hugged us. It was incredibly special because Jay was able to include my family! Also, it was a little ridiculous because I was wearing a parka jacket, crop pants with hiking socks and old man sandals. Thank goodness the photos are mostly of our silhouette!
I always love a well thought out proposal and it’s safe to say Jay really took the time to create a proposal Vanessa will never forget! 🙂
We met Vanessa & Jay in the red rocks on a beautiful fall day. Sedona seems to be a fan favorite right now, and I’m not complaining. During their engagement session, Vanessa & Jay were so fun! Jay has so many jokes and keeps Vanessa laughing (my favorite). They are both quick-humored and it really made photographing them such a great time! Vanessa & Jay have two dogs that they’ve rescued together, and we were so excited to get to meet them! We snapped some adorable moments with their pups, and then explored the Sedona scenery until the sun dipped behind the mountains. We will be photographing their wedding this Spring at the Farmhouse at Schnepf Farms, so be on the lookout!!
